This
insane guy
genius built a wooden replica of a 9-cylinder radial engine that shows its inner workings. Take the time to watch these two videos, and be amazed, not only at the how 9 cylinders go through the 4-stroke process, but at the amount of skill and craftsmanship that went into building this model. And spare a thought for the brilliant engineers who came up with this whole idea in the first place. There’s way, way too much math in this for me. Also, stick around for the end of Part 2 when he cranks it as fast as he can.

Who’s idea was it to put pistons in a circle?

This guy is great. I seriously want my own wooden redial engine!

Build one! Maybe he’ll share the plans!

No idea. I’d start your research here.

I’d like to see him make a wooden model of a Gnome Rotary... That would be the crowning touch

And just in case that idea wasn’t weird enough, they had rotary engines too. Crankshaft stays still, cylinders rotate around it.

Yup. The Sopwith Camel had such an engine. I understand that it made the Camel pretty difficult to fly for beginners, but also gave it excellent maneuverability. The Lego Camel has a rotary engine.

A redial engine? How about a *69 engine?

Fascinating stuff! Thanks for finding those.
